Twists of Fate

Happy holidays everyone! Wow, I didn't realize it has been two weeks since my last post. It has been pretty hectic lately with Christmas and traveling. We had a great holiday and we are looking forward to a comparable New Year!

So, I had a great post started today on one of my favorite authors: Malcolm Gladwell (Tipping Point, Blink) and his new book, Outliers. You can visit his website by clicking here. I was beginning to explain how he can compile and analyze data from the most random souces and break it down into the most interesting observations. Did you know that there is actually a "magic" number that almost every successful person has hit in number of hours studying, practicing, researching, etc. to be accomplished at their passion? I had no idea! Guess what that number is? 10,000 hours. Yes, ten thousand. Yikes!

I was making a comparison between feeling the impact of the hours I have had to put into my new life vs. enjoying the "process" of self-development simultaneously. I actually had some good stuff for you, however, as I was about to publish my post, the doorbell rang.

Nick went to see who it was and to my amazement it was a very nice man who had read my story in the Dallas Morning News and felt compelled to meet us. He has a friend who shared my experience and he wanted his friend to meet us also. He had a letter for us to read that was very moving. After he left left, my mind got distracted and I couldn't remember what I wanted to write in the post!

How many times have we gone out of our way to extend our thoughts to a stranger? He was doing a very thoughtful thing for his friend but also doing something that impacted both Nick and I tremendously. Things are so unexpected sometimes! Malcolm Gladwell and the man at my door are all examples of how every day can be a new experience if we just open our minds with optimism!

Peace,
Jen

Keeping Your Eyes Peeled

I have always had an affinity for the "local" scene no matter where I am and participating in the real flavor of my surroundings.

I like to go to local restaurants, markets, lectures, coffee shops etc. and experience what makes a community thrive.

By Nick and I doing this as much as possible, we have developed a curiosity for things that make me take a moment to go "hmmm..". ;)

Yesterday I was at the gym and looked around to find that Nick and I were by far the youngest in the place. I kinda laughed and thought we missed the memo.

But, as I was pushing the weights really hard and thought this is my last one (my arms were buckling), I looked up to see an approximately 80-year-old guy with a big grin, sweat band, jogging suit and the attitude of a college athlete.

He was working out like a madman! Nick and I both had a "hmmm.." moment. The old man gave that extra boost and I (barely) finished a few more sets.

Then, I started thinking about how many times we look so hard to find inspiration or a way to grow or change things; I thought how simple that "find" can actually be. We all gotta stop looking so hard!

If you think about it and keep your eyes open, it really isn't that difficult. Driving no more than a few miles from my house to the gym, I just started my day by being positive and keeping "my eyes peeled". :)

There is never a certain age, disability, gender or occupation that should stop us from making the best of the time we have. If you're 80 and want to lift weights and run, go for it! Maybe you're a CEO of a corporation and want to resign to run your own coffee shop, go all in!

I really feel like we hold ourselves back too often because of what society may think. At the end of the day, society isn't giving you hugs at night, words of inspiration or self-worth. It comes from within and how we learn from our local community and surroundings.

This week, find a local bakery, adopt a family in need, or just high-five the next 80-year-old you see working out! Supporting others is a great feeling. I know on a personal level how much I cherish all the support I've been so blessed to have. Happy holidays and I will talk with everyone soon!

Love,
Jen

Thanks, Love & Marathons

Still eating? :) We had such a great Thanksgiving and even tried some new things for the Vegetarians in the family. I won't repeat what we thought of it but we washed it down with such great desserts that we just focused on the not-so-vegetarian items and made it through. Did someone say Tofurkey?

Our family seems to grow and grow every year. The older I get the more I see how things have come to be. We have always had "extras" at the table and that is one of the things I love about the holidays.

We have always been taught to extend family support to those who need it (family or not). So, our table can be the best for story telling, but, beware because they are most likely going to embarrass!

Being raised with the value of making others feel welcome—no matter what their story—has provided me the foundation in which I feel so blessed to emulate and to learn from. Through almost all of my daily challenges, I can't express how thankful I am to have a circle of support.

On a concluding note—not such a great picture—Skyline and I were being photographed by the wonderful Mr. Nicholas and I decided to share it with you. Sky was really the one being photographed, but being as though he is a service dog, he wouldn't get on the couch without me!

He has been the best companion and he is a king to the family, and friends too, once you successfully introduced yourself. He is a rock star in some places when he is carrying a sack for me, television remotes, newspapers, car keys, etc. People just love him. For everyone who helped with Skyline: I THANK YOU! He is such a special addition to our family.

Chicago Half-Marathon: If anyone is interested in making the end of their 2009 summer a time to remember, think about contributing to our humble team representing the P.L.A.Y. Foundation, or just being a sponsor in any way you feel comfortable.

We have formed a team to do the 5K. People will most likely doing both, so do not worry about choosing one or the other. It is September 13, 2009. It will be a memorable weekend! Hopefully the following night we could hit downtown Chicago for a beer! Feel free to e-mail me at jgriffin@playfoundation.net if you want to go with us. Since we have plenty of time before the deadline, I will remind everyone again soon.

Sowing the Seed

The Ringler family is one of the most steadfast and compassionate groups of people you will ever meet. This is a short story that Sharon Ringler wrote to reflect on her brave journey to defeat lung cancer.

I spent the week of October 27th, 2008, in Houston for a three month check-up and the results did not look good. We were told it was highly probable that the cancer had returned since the area we had been watching near the lung now showed an increase in size.

The lab work supported this. I stayed two additional days for another lung biopsy. We all cried.

During this time, Glenn and I visited the chapel in the hospital. We entered with a service which had already begun. The African-American lady minister was placing her hands on individuals that were up front and anointing them with oil and saying individual prayers.

We just sat and listened. One of the ladies fell backwards and others caught her and she just sat on the floor. Glenn leaned over and asked me what had just happened. I told him I thought it must be an Evangelical service and that sometimes, folks collapse when they feel the Holy Spirit. Being raised a Lutheran, he was all eyes! The minister then turned to us and asked if we wanted to come forward for prayers.

I told Glenn I thought we had better do it. She asked who the prayers were for and since I wasn't together enough emotionally to respond, Glenn told her. She asked my name and asked why we were asking for prayers. Glenn said it looked like a recurrence.

She touched my shoulder, read from scripture and anointed my head with oil. She looked me straight in the eye and said "you do not have this illness." I just looked at her. At the same time, I had such a warm feeling from the top of my head down to my toes, I began to feel at peace with the whole situation. (No, it was not a hot flash!)

The minister said another prayer and then we went back and sat down. She concluded the service and then came over to us. She said, "Sharon, God spoke to me up there and you are to figure out what he wants you to do. You are to sow the seed. Remember that—you are to sow the seed." I just shook my head in agreement, not really understanding.

We finally got home last Sunday and knew we had to wait 3-5 business days before learning of the results. I finally called Thursday morning and left a message. I called Thursday afternoon and left another message. The nurse called me around 5:30 in the evening and said the doctor was aware of my phone calls, but the physician's assistant was checking to see if she could give me the results; or if the doctor wanted to talk to me directly.

I told her that didn't sound too promising. An hour later, the doctor called. She had been home ill with the flu. She just said they really don't understand it, but there is a small mass near the lung that is a pocket of fluid, which evidently my body has not absorbed since the surgery a year ago. She said both biopsies were negative and there are no signs of cancer. She and the surgeon could not believe it nor understand.

Glenn and I both agreed that we understood. We were blessed once again through the power of prayer from our family and friends.

So, after all the drama, I finally sat down and read the Salina-Journal that night. Each day there is a passage of scripture. That day it read, "Oh Lord my God, I called to you for help and you healed me." Psalms 30:2.

I've decided maybe telling my story is part of "sowing the seed".

Love you all,
Sharon

A Little Country Western

Country & Western music fan or not, tune in to the CMAs November 12th at 8/7 central! If you haven't been keeping up a lot lately, an amazing family friend, Shantel Grace, has designed an earring line called Jenny's Collection to benefit The P.L.A.Y. Foundation to assist young amputees.

The exciting thing about Jenny's Collection is that it will be worn by CMT's host Katie Cook and Kid Rock will be wearing her other line, Genuine Faux Fur, during the CMA awards!

Don't forget: through December, 50% of all proceeds from Jenny's Collection through Designs by Shantel will benefit the P.L.A.Y. Foundation and its mission.

Quoted from Shantel's biography:

"Shantel Grace is a farmer’s daughter from Kansas. Unlike most artists walking the streets of Broadway searching for a record deal, Shantel writes about the injustices of today’s American farmers, the truth about poverty in rural America, and in her latest poetic collection, she discovers life’s uncertainties in the ultimate story of love and heartbreak.

Never the cookie-cutter commercial country singer, Shantel made a name for herself in the alt/country acoustic rock scene. Her fans include record label executives from some of the major record labels in Nashville and Los Angeles, not to mention thousands of music lovers around the world.

After a period of introspection, Shantel began honing her musicianship by jamming in after-hours bars and writers venues showcasing her talents from Nashville to San Francisco. Her melancholy tone, complete with acoustic piano, guitar and her three piece band, proved a success in Nashville and on the road."

Check her out on itunes, Starbucks, eMusic (and many others). If your lucky you will see her live, catch one of her shows!

A Good Point

I was talking with a business owner across the street from us. We got into a chat about life and I brought up Jen. He mentioned that we are all just a quick blip on earth and in 100 years who will even know who we are.

Its a good point if you think about it. Then, he said "what matters is what we give while we're here—from the heart—what we can do to help people or just be a friend." I thought, there's another point. How important are we, really? Some might think they're more important than others, but the truth is you're really not.

We are all here to help each other and play on the same field. Be humble and realize that you are here to help make this a better place. Just be yourself & remember that we are all born with compassion. It never leaves but some choose not to exercise it.

We're not all woven from the same cloth—true, but we decide our individual outlook every morning when we wake up. Be a friend to someone, say something that inspires another. Just be positive. In a 100 years we will be dust in the wind so, let's be remembered as human beings that assisted others in making the earth a better place to live. In addition, I want to say how proud I am of Jen.

I see her all the time and each time I learn from her. She lives with the outlook that most only talk about. She is doing it. Bridge the gap from who you want to be to who you really are. She has done this from the Foundation to her family & friends. Jen's a busy soul that cares about the world she lives in.

Cheers,
Matthew

Team Cody on Oprah

This is my newest inspiration and source of "coolness". If your not busy October 28th or need a reason to use your TiVo, tune in to Oprah and watch how quickly this little guy can make all your fears go away.

I hope to meet him and have him speak for my foundation. His website, Team Cody, details his schedule and he seems to be busier than our Presidential candidates!

His smile, spirit and tenacity to "not be scared", as he says, is truly amazing. And, he is only six years old! I look at this amazing gift he has, to not only feel good about who he is, but to make others feel so comfortable and I think, "how does a child with his differences look at life with a smile and other kids struggle?"

Yes, I can relate to him, and I can identify with his support system, but I had a long time to build an understanding of people and relationships. He has only had six tiny years with hardly any practice in life to deal with obstacles (let alone his amputations).

I'm thinking there is something very valuable within this little guy. He is teaching adults, but isn't it traditionally supposed to be the other way around? No matter what the specifics involving a certain individual (age, race, degree of disability, etc.) are, if it gives people inspiration, then that is all that honesty matters.

Don't just read, but learn. Don't just say things, act upon them. Don't just think about what the rewards are for helping people, get involved and try! Don't just watch Cody, listen and apply his struggles to your own anxieties and trials!

The Ol' Football Injury

It was the most unique comment I have received to date. I was walking into a restaurant when the "man of the house" looked at me, smiled and said "old football injuries, huh?"

You are reading this and thinking how insensitive, rude or how clever that was. If you do find it funny or clever, you are probably wondering what my perception was. You want to know what I thought? I found it hilarious and comforting at the same time.

Clearly, I could have been in the NFL, but my dancing abilities kept me from running in a straight line. I did play for the Washington Redskins as a wide-receiver, but of course, I was traded to the Dallas Cowboys in '99. So, I thought he either recognized me from an ESPN news conference or he knew the perfect way to make me laugh and feel at ease. He even was charming enough to throw in a wink.

That could have gone either way. I could have been offended but it actually provided a refreshing reminder that a majority of people are committed to improving the human condition and comforting people. Humor and compassion speaks volumes!

Last night Nick & I went to the House of Blues to see Gavin DeGraw. His performance was fantastic! Music literally brings me (and everyone else) in and out of moods and emotions and is a great therapy mechanism. We both have a bit of a cold and fever but were so glad we went. The music just made us feel together. Too bad the only one who can tolerate my singing is 0ur dog!

Target Practice

Tonight I realized that my whipped cream container skill was a bit lacking. I was trying to squeeze whip cream onto chocolate mousse when it sprayed all over the wall and missed their target! Luckily, Nick understood the concept of "it's the thought that counts". We laughed while cleaning up the mess but realized that the best part of the desert was being wiped off the wall.

I've learned a bit these past few weeks about staying on target and keeping your motivation going. I tend to get questions about staying focused, keeping my head up, and what's next in my life. I've discovered a lot of these answers through writing and observing. I've learned that listening vs. talking gets you farther than you think.

Working with Sky (our new service dog, for those who didn't know) has been fun but it has also challenged emotions that I didn't even know were there. You get a lot of people wanting to touch and ask questions which I'm getting used to. It's not that I mind the dog, it's the mindset of others. I was in a store when I was told that I wasn't allowed to have a dog in this particular place. Rather than jumping on it and explaining myself, I decided to let her learn the situation. I took a step back from her and let her tell me again that I couldn't have a dog. I was a bit conflicted because it was somewhat obvious, but she came up to me again and said "I just realized this was a service dog" and she let it go.  We chatted and I understood her lack of education and understanding of the situation.

This is to be expected but, it brought up some uncomfortable emotions. I think I just wanted her to "get it" without drawing attention.  However, that is a bit much (and selfish) of me to ask. I realized just how powerful knowledge really is and 90% of misunderstandings and confusion is stemmed from lack of knowledge. So, educate, educate, educate and talk, talk, talk. Be true to your emotions and yourself and you can work through it.

I have also observed my 84-year-old grandmother go through a double by-pass surgery this past week and come out on top. She told me that it was all going to be fine and she's right. She is an amazing woman that took a train from Missouri to Kansas with only a $1 in her pocket to find work and start a family. Talk about inspiring!

I stay on target and keep motivated by my experiences, the love in my life, and the constant opportunities I see to educate and help others. We don't always hit the target but you can't stop practicing and expect to hit the bullseye.

Challenge yourself to educate when you would rather get upset or just want someone else to "get it". It can change the outcome. By the way, I've taught myself to play basketball in our driveway. I had two baskets last week! Look out Kobe.

National Disability Awareness Month

In 1945 Congress enacted a law to educate the public about the issues related to disabilities. Now, it's a month recognized by the likes of Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles (in spirit), Helen Keller and many more.

Do you know how many famous people, people we look up to, and people that you would be surprised by have disabilities? Dyslexia, blindness, autism, etc. Just goes to show how a "difference" doesn't define you. So many have become instruments of inspiration on so many levels.

A video project I highly suggest you take a look at: Right to Risk. It follows 8 individuals with disabilities on a 15 day whitewater rafting trip on the Colorado River. To learn about more significant months like October, I suggest you surf the Library of Congress' homepage.

On another note,  I have been spending 2 to 3 hours a day with Sky and I'm excited to say he will be moving in on Saturday the 18th of October. We went shopping and he grabbed the plastic bag and carried it out to the car! The lady who was checking us out, looked at me in amazement and said "do it again, do it again". It was pretty funny.

Nick and I and Dean (a good friend of Nick's), went to a lecture this week about "the new American Dream" which was presented by John Zogby. If your not familiar with him he has been a pollster since 1984. It was fabulous. What I enjoyed so much was the intellectual thoughts of the younger audience.

It was at SMU and the students (really everyone) were so engaged. It had me thinking how we treat everyone around us and where the ideas and thoughts of the polls come from. It's truly fascinating to see results and how life affects outcomes!  Check out the book The Way We'll Be: The Transformation of the American Dream. His thesis focused on the transition of American materialism and isolationism to the future of our political, cultural and spiritual awakening. I let you know how I liked the book sometime soon!

As a little suggestion for the week: don't take yourself so seriously. I have found that laughing is so great for the soul. I came home the other day and tripped on something and landed right on the floor. It was pretty ugly but I laughed so hard because I thought about how lucky I was that I was home and not in a movie theater!

Sky Update

Just a quick update on our new family member! We are finally at the point of transitioning training to the immediate family! Starting this Saturday I will be spending quite a bit of time with our new assistance dog, Sky, for the next few weeks then she will be coming home. We are really excited and really looking forward to the added companion.

Even though she is not home yet, I am in a state of such excitement. There is a wonderful group of friends that have made this possible and I can't thank you enough. The idea of what you all have done, with many who had never even met me, is just amazing and a great example of what the human spirit can do.

The New Mrs. Whipple

So, I don't have the photos yet but we added (and blended) new family members this weekend. My younger brother Matt, got married in a beautiful outdoor setting. It was so pretty and the setting was very quaint.  We had a great time. Christy is such an awesome friend and source of "life" for our family.

Nick and I were both in the wedding (bridesmaid & groomsmen) and we had to walk around a pool to get to where we had to stand. It wasn't until after that I had so many people tell me they were taking a breath when I turned a corner. The number of people thinking I was going to fall was quite large, ha! Nick was great and provided support and it went perfect.

Little Matthew got some singing in and entertained the rehearsal dinner with 3 tunes. He was so excited to tell his teacher today. He had fun.

Another very fun part of the evening was that P.L.A.Y. was awarded a very nice check from Justin who ran in the Leadville, Colorado race (earlier post). He ran for P.L.A.Y. and people donated for his cause. We got some great photos which I will share with you. Thanks again Justin!

I had the opportunity to see so many people that had supported me during the hospital that I have to say was a bit overwhelming.  It seems like no matter what we run into in our daily lives, as long as we have a place to call "home" things don't seem to be so bad.

I have many long distance relationships and every time I see them I miss them. But, it also makes me appreciate how taking time for things that matter leads to such a wonderful array of friends, in all walks of life. Time is such a precious commodity, we need to make the best of every minute and reach out to people. Too much time passes and it shouldn't.

You Never Know Where You Might Meet an Angel

For those of you who need that extra shot of espresso, a reality check or just a way to feel good about everything going on in our world today, familiarize yourself with Same Kind of Different As Me! Its a fabulous book filled with life changing messages.

Sunday morning we had a little different version of spiritual growth.

We had the opportunity to hear Denver More & Ron Hall (co-authors of the book) tell their story about how they met under the most extreme opposite situations and how it changed both of their lives.

When they were finished everyone in the room was in awe. A discussion was started about the lessons we could learn from and so many people had profound things to say.

The interesting thing was that some were having that "ah-ha" moment but yet listening to them speak it seemed obvious.  Until a point was made: until you have that experience which brings you an angel, you may not get it.

The other was this: you never know where your angels come from. Don't underestimate any situation!

Testing Your Limbits

Hello all! I hope everyone had a chance to catch up on a little R&R over the weeknd. We had such a great time this weekend with my soon-to-be (three weeks and counting) sister-in-law's family at Beaver Lake, Arkansas.

I discovered what an awesome wake boarder we are bringing into the clan, not to mention a boat driver, woah! It was a sibling weekend. We ate (and ate), played a great game called Hoopla. Try it and it will definitely bring you out of your shell and have you laughing.

Then stayed on the water all day. We totally lost track of time and just savored the moments! We even introduced my husband to Dairy Queen. This was a very momentous occasion. On Monday, September 1st, he was introduced to the "Blizzard". We were on the road when the ice cream craving took over and before we knew it the car had taken itself right into a front row spot by the door. He loved it. I swear, it's the little things in life that keeps the smiles going!

Anyway, little Matthew was all about learning how to wake board and tube. So, we all tried a few things. How did I do?

Well, we had a three person tube which I quickly realized was going to affect my weight distribution. So, I tightned every muscle I had leaned forward and was ready to perform many acrobatic tricks, I held on to the handles by sliding my wrists under and then just let the ride take me. I felt like I was on a trampoline. I would bounce higher than everyone and then get the giggles so bad I couldn't hold on then...flip, right off the side. Then back in, assume the position, and start over for round 2, 3 & 4. We had a great time.

Then, as my confidence grew, I wanted to try knee boarding. This my friends, was a great Kodak moment.  With help from all, I ended up on my stomach holding on for dear life. One thing I didn't expect was the faster we went my legs started hitting the water so hard that I once again, got the giggles. Not because it hurt or that it was all that funny but I have developed a really soft spot on the back of my leg that tickles. Is that not the weirdest thing? :)

So, the water was actually tickling my leg. So, here we go. Laugh, roll off, back up.  Haha!  This went on for a while until Nick decided to come behind me, which pushed me up higher on the board and then he held the rope and I balanced on the board. This was where we developed the team work to make it work. We held on for quite a while!

I loved it! What a liberating weekend. There is something about being in water that makes you feel "free".  We saw a few people that could have been less free, but all the same, it provides an opportunity to forget and be yourself.

Fred & Ginger went with us until I got in the water. They went into a cubby hole and stayed dry. I'm sure they were laughing and wondering what they were missing. Anyway, pictures to come and laughs to follow! Have a great day!

A Rough Start, A Few Laughs & Friends in Low Places

Good day! Before I start this post, I wanted to give you a bit of encouragement. I live by a school where the boys track team is up running every morning. I was watching one kid this morning who I thought was going to fall over any minute! He was shuffling (not running), his head was titled to the side (as if his shoulder was a pillow) , and he was way behind the pack.

It was one of those moments where you start to feel his pain. Poor guy, what a rough start to the day, I thought. Then, out from behind came two other kids that weren't doing much better but noticed this kid struggling. Without much but a simple mental push, they got up next to him and all three started pacing each other.

They started picking up the pace, the head came off his shoulders, and they got closer and closer to the lead pack. It was like watching a flower get a little water and sprout up. I'm sure he is at home sleeping now but it was a great way to enjoy the morning. :)

So, after coffee and the morning race, I got back to reality. What's been going on? Well, my new 10 friends have been with me at a few events. They made their debut at an engagement party for my brother and Christy. How did they do? Well, they did a nice job of holding my wine glass and talked a lot for me. We used to talk A LOT together. :) I was reminded of this when one of my friends went onto another glass, oops!

My youngest brother had posted a while back about a friend of ours who was going to run 100 miles and his goal was to raise $5K for P.L.A.Y. Well, that race was this past weekend and he raised just under the $5K goal! Just amazing! But, let me tell you how this was done. Justin and his partner didn't finish the race (it's 100 miles!). But not because of the mileage, rather it was mother nature. This is just crazy.

The race started at 4 in the morning under these conditions: 30 degrees, snow, rain, sleet and his running partner suffered from hypothermia and a twisted knee. Some runners even had to be carried out by helicopter. WOW! They did such a great thing. Even though they didn't cross the finish line the end result was greatly summed up by "achieving anything, even goals one had worked toward for a year, pales in comparison to the simple act of reaching out and caring for another human being."

I've done some speaking this week, met with a wonderful author (fascinating how the book industry works), been at meetings, watched some great videos provided to me by Scottish Rite, found my new (of several) inspiration at teamcody.com & tried to sleep.

But, one of the things I have observed is the people I have met. I don't know if it's me, them, or the situation but its been fun. Everyone needs friends in low places. Check this out: have you ever talked to the person in the tollbooth?

How about your drive-through bank teller? Until recently, I pretty much did my thing at both places and moved on. Well, last weekend it was kind of late and I went through the toll and we were getting change. As this took a second, I asked her how she was doing and when she got off her shift. She responded that she had a little longer to go on her shift but then said (with a smile), "I'm just really glad to have a job."

How she said this really made me appreciate how we take things for granted. Then, I love my drive through teller at the bank. This guy is always so helpful and has the best things to say. He is always cheerful and provides fantastic service but, the one thing I find so refreshing is that he makes an effort of getting outside of himself and making the "drive-through" experience something nice in your day.

So what do these two examples mean to you? No matter what your doing, be the best that you can be. Even though our goals in life may be different, the way we treat others can get you much farther in life than having it "all" but no spirit.

Swimming With New Hands

So, how was my weekend? Well, in addition to watching the Olympics and the best mens' swimming relay ever (go USA!),

...going to an airplane museum and being envious of my little brother's trip to Japan for two weeks, I spent time with my new 10 friends. ;) After waiting for such a long time, I finally received my hands! Amazing how real they look and feel.

I can actually swim with them, wear my wedding ring, grab the car steering wheel and most of all use the jewelry that has been waiting on the back burner.

Its a strange feeling to have something so normal feel so weird. I had to get used to having length again and having the ability to scratch my head, hold my purse, etc. I realized just how much I have learned to do without them. It really makes you realize what you can adapt to when the situation presents itself.

Its the next phase. But, I have a challenge for you. Because I now have what I thought I could not live without but realize that I have adapted without, take something away for two weeks and see how you feel.

Rather than drive a car, just walk, take the train, or carpool and meet some new people along the way. Don't eat out and learn how to cook. Take away or reduce TV and spend more time with the family or read more books. Whatever it is, take it away for a while and I promise, you will adapt.

The fun part is finding how you compensate, how creative you become or new things you discover. Then ask yourself: do I really have to have it?

There is always a piece of yourself that gets discovered through circumstance. See what you can do and become.

Wishing you the best,
Jen

Sky the Service Dog & More Updates

I think we will finally have a new addition to our family! I was told last week that we are 95% sure that I have a service dog and should be at our house within a month to 6 weeks.

He is an awesome male chocolate lab named Sky. They have done such an amazing job training this little guy. We didn't get a chance to name the dog as they name them while training, but I think it's a look into the future. Sky is the limit. Hopefully he won't be our only addition.

Hand Update: I am getting my hands this week. It seems like forever since this started but will be an exciting time.

Pilates Video Update: Thanks to ALL who voted and who sent me so many wonderful emails. We didn't win but came so close. We got some great calls as well. It was fun and I'm glad that Donna and I were able to participate.

Weekend Update: Little Matthew went to a cooking camp this weekend then all the kids served lunch to the parents/adults in their aprons & hats.

It was so much fun and I have to say, great food and great skills taught for the kiddos. As someone pointed out, the most impressive thing with 30 kids: not one dish was dropped! Now, that's a good day.

Foundation Update: This is really coming along and will bring so many smiles to so many youth.

I find something to be inspired by everyday I work on this! I hope a year from now I can give you so much information and would hope to have helped numerous kids.

There is so much more to life if you allow yourself to explore the unknown and the possibilities.

Wishing everyone a great day!

Dinner Reservations for Two, Three, Maybe Four

Have you ever been at a party or just hanging with friends and you start asking the questions like “if you could have dinner with three famous people, who would they be and why?” Well, I recently had that conversation. When I started to answer I realized how different my answers are now than a few years ago.

The first person I would like to meet would be Oscar Pistorius. He is the South African para-olympic runner who made history while becoming the first amputee runner to be accepted into the 2008 Olympics. How much of an inspiration is this? I am fascinated with his determination and tenacity for achievement. I wouldn't run with him but would definitely give him a run for his money with a really fast walk!

Then there is a 64-year-old grandmother. She did a nude photo shoot for Dove at 64! That deserves more than dinner. The fact that she got out of her comfort zone and showed the world her beauty and self-confidence at that age is definitely inspiring.

What about Maya Angelou? I came close on this one. I was at a Professional Women's Conference about 7 years ago and she spoke. She was so full of wisdom. What a lady she was. I would just love to pick her brain and refer to her words for inspiration. Things like: "If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude." We all need a little of that in our lives.

And, ok, I have a fourth. The grand ole' Willy Nelson. I'm not so much a fan of the music, but more a fan of his persona. Pay attention to the people he attracts. He has the most interesting, eclectic and colorful group of people that just love him. All different genres of music, ages, nationalities, etc. The guy can hang with a local farmer, famous political figures, Snoop Dogg and just did a new CD with Wynton Marsalis.

Agh, a fifth! Bono. Need I say more? The ultimate humanitarian! I'll have another update soon, have a good week!

A Note From Justin Ringler

The Ringler family has been among the numerous examples of endless support, inspiration and hope to all who have known them. Justin Ringler, the oldest son, is participating in the 100-mile ultra-marathon in Leadville, Colorado and is dedicating his participation in memory of Brett Zamrzla of Sylvan Grove, Jen and "paying it forward". Please do not feel obligated in any way to contribute monetarily. A moment of silence in memory of Brett, a simple way to "pay it forward" and encouragement for Justin's adventure is what's important.

Dear friends and family,

In January of this year, Brett Zamrzla, formerly of Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and a student at Fort Hays State University, lost his life in a car accident. His family; Jeanette, Erin and Ben, requested in lieu of flowers, food, money, etc., that friends and family honor Brett by “paying it forward”.

They asked for us to consider who might best receive the gift we had to give and to give it in loving memory of Brett.

In March of 2007, Jennifer Whipple Griffin was admitted to a hospital in Dallas, TX, where she spent the next several months fighting for her life. She was eventually diagnosed with Septic Shock Syndrome. During the course of this extensive hospital stay, Jenny had to have her hands and legs amputated. Due to her tenaciousness and positive attitude, Jenny has gone through rehabilitation and now has returned part time to work. She has two artificial legs (named Fred and Ginger) and plans to one day have artificial hands.

On August 16 and 17, of this year, I will be running the 100 mile trail race in Leadville, Colorado. My gift is to run this race, in memory of Brett and to give any monetary support to Jenny’s fund, The P.L.A.Y. Foundation (Positive Living for Active Youth). Her website is getwelljen.blogspot.com. I would like to honor both my friends by “paying it forward” and have set a goal to raise $5,000. We are asking our closest friends and family to help us “pay it forward.”

For those of you who would like to support this endeavor, an account has been opened under “For the Greater Good” at Thunder Bank, 102 N. Main, PO Box 338, Sylvan Grove, KS. 67481. Please specify “Jenny’s Fund” in the memo. To find more information about this trail race, please visit leadvilletrail100.com. You can be kept up to date on the participants, the outcome, etc. with this website. My parents, Glenn and Sharon Ringler, and my wife, Angie, will be participating as my support team during this 30 hour run.

Brett’s life and legacy will be remembered during this special day, and Jenny’s fund will change lives with your monetary support as she too has committed to “paying it forward “ as her new foundation will benefit amputee youth by bringing sport activities into their world. Thank you for joining our team to help “pay it forward.”

Love,
Justin Ringler

Belated 4th, Communication Around the World

I hope you enjoyed the fireworks, time off and great family time! We saw some great fireworks this weekend and had a fun time in a parade as well. While I was waiting for the parade to start I witnessed a really cool conversation.

A family from Bejing was visiting the states and happened to have found the parade. They were talking amongst themselves when a lady, who was from Texas and looked so far removed from Bejing, walked up and starts conversing with them (she was fluent in Mandarin).

I was amazed at how they came together and how the lady from Texas welcomed them. I started thinking how everyone can relate to eachother if we take an interest in the other, no matter the obstacle. Even though I was thoroughly confused as to what they were saying, I saw lots of smiles and human kindness. It was great.

It got me thinking about my foundation and how far I could reach people and happen to come across an article in the paper about a man from Sierra Leone who lost a leg from combat with a Rebel.

Without getting political, there were so many lessons from listening to the conversation and reading about someone from Sierra Leone. At the end of the day, no matter where we are from or what we have experienced, we all need to be heard, respected and the ability to be "accepted" with our differences. Things like this give me hope & inspiration everyday.

I have found expression in things now that I didn't realize before. My lesson? ACCEPTANCE. Life is way too short. You can't love without respecting and you can't respect without acceptance.

Take this week and turn an obstacle into something worth respecting & loving, even if it's yourself, :)

Jen

Go Ahead, Smile

The next time you are feeling really frustrated or like you just can't stand someone or something, what do you do? Smile. It releases endorphins and makes us feel good.

My internet has been in a constant state of chaos, I was in traffic for about 1 1/2 hours Saturday night, I was leaving the gym today when someone asked why I was taking up a handicap spot (big smile on this one), I'm reading a great book when I realized some of the most important pages are missing. And, I ended up without keys and no way to get in my house! Fabulous.

Smiles are the best because they are easy, economical, universal and a simple language. However, we do have the sarcastic smile. I think the guy asking me about my parking spot might have received one from me today, but I'm not sure. :)

I'm staying busy these days.

I was asked many times when I got out of the hospital if I would ever consider public speaking. And as I have said before, I would rather become Paris Hilton's B.F.F. than speak in front of large crowds. However, I have recently been talking with the best people to get me prepared. I'm looking forward to this part of my journey and seeing the doors open up more and more. It's so therapeutic.

The foundation is coming along and I'll have more to share in the near future. I'm waiting on a few things. I also wanted to provide my e-mail again as I have received requests that I would love to accommodate. Always feel free to contact me at: griffinja123@gmail.com.

Have a great week and I will talk to you soon!

How Life Does Go On

Yesterday I had an appointment to discuss my hands and look and what is to come. Truly amazing how real they look and how I can have my fingers sized to fit my wedding ring.

I'm about 6 weeks away. Out of the 1 1/2 hour appointment, there were 3 minutes that really stuck with me. We discussed what was important to me as far as functionality and he told me about a few patients who really wanted to be able to open a door, do gardening, etc. and I thought, AMAZING.

I'm in a category with many of his patients and what is important to us is all different. When we all had hands I promise we never thought about the importance of what we had. As you go through your day think about every little thing you do and you can pretty quickly determine what you can do without. It can be liberating if you can allow yourself to let go!

So, after people have prosthetics how do they take life to the next level? This is where my efforts will be placed for a long time. I have established the P.L.A.Y. Foundation (Positive Living for Active Youth) to allow those with amputations to become involved with sports activities as a way to build the self-esteem and confidence while going to the next phase: living life! This will be truly official in about one week.

It is very exciting to be able to reach out to the community and see all the faces of those who have had an experience that we can all learn from. I am finishing the logo and behind the scenes details but will let share it all with you as soon as its here. I will have an interview process and be able to connect with those who are wanting to grow and understand what this is all about. Really looking forward to this!

I have a busy week and will keep you up to date as the week progresses.

Have a fantastic day!

Monday Morning News

Good morning all! You gotta love this morning heat in texas. It's only 8:20 A.M. and I'm on
the patio with my coffee and already sweating. How is a girl to enjoy that? :)

The video: first, thanks to ALL that have voted so far! We are currently in 3rd place and we have until July 31st so we are shooting for 1st. Remember, you can vote 1 time a day, everyday. (I'm just throwing that out there, ha!)

So what's been going on? Last week was really busy. My dog may be getting closer to residing at the Griffin house. I had a home assessment to see everything I may need, specific to the house and how cool is this: I really will have a partner in crime. She can help me carry in groceries, bring me my purse (however, I was informed of a 5 pound weight limit) and even laundry. The list goes on and on.

I'm going to look at my hand prosthetics tomorrow so I can give you better update. This process is really fascinating. I'll give you the scoop this week.

Annoucement: I have something very exciting to share this week. I have a few things to do today and tomorrow but will share with you as soon as I can. Sorry to tease but just keep checking!

The Egg: I learned something this weekend. Little Matthew and I were making cupcakes this weekend when we realized we had a little issue. One ingredient: egg. He is not a fan off eggs, almost like me and liver, so we looked at each other and thought, how in the world is this going to work as he didn't even want to try and crack it...heaven forbid the egg get on him!

So, I discovered that you don't need fingers to crack an egg. WOW, I held on for dear life as I turned the egg on its side and started to tap it on the counter to create a small crack.

The crack allowed me just enough of an opening that I could set it in the container we were using to cook and push to release the "gooo". It worked, without breaking the shell into bits. So funny how you can feel like such a kid again but I was on an internal high for about 2 hours.

There are days that I feel as if I am 5 again because of how such a small step can make me feel. But, darn it, I made cupcakes and cracked an egg this weekend! I'm headed out to visit my surgeon and spend the day with my hubby. :)

Have a wonderful day!

What If?

Sent to me by my wonderful and soon to be sister-in-law:

What if Fred had never danced
And Ginger had stayed at home?
What if Frank had never sung
And Sting had remained a drone?

What if Einstein had never questioned
And Livingstone stayed in bed?
What if Columbus had grown potatoes
And Scott had been easily led?

What if Van Gogh had never tried
And Monet had never painted?
What if Picasso had followed the rules
And Rembrandt had not created?

What if Spielberg had been a tailor
And Hitchcock had sold ice cream?
What if you had never dared
To live your own sweet dream

Hmm...good questions, huh?

Have a great weekend!

View in the Mirror

Ever looked in the mirror and see something different than someone else? Ever read something and get a different interpretation than someone else?

Nick and I were in the car the other morning and noticed what looked like a homeless person, looking at himself and brushing his hair through the reflection of a building. Besides the fact that he had a good look going on, it made us instantly look at each other and say "did you see that?"

I thought about him on and off all weekend; where was he going, what's his story, etc. Then I thought that he and I saw two different things that day.

He was trying to find a mirror and we were looking for a reason or a story. How ironic that we drove by right at the time that his reflection came up and made us "reflect" the rest of our drive.

I have had a lot of conversations lately which have been both eye opening and self reflective and its really all about the mirror. We carry it with us whether we realize it or not.

Others are looking at us in ways we can't see and vice-versa. Do you think that was on purpose? We can't do anything without others in this world.

Make the best of it and look at the mirrors or reflectors in your life and understand that its probably by design.

Hope you had a great holiday weekend!

Java Break, Hands & Keep the Change Update

I started my day with a great cup of coffee and great conversation. I was with a friend who always has a way of putting life in perspective. While we were talking she said something that made me stop and think.

She said “I wish you could have seen all the love that was around you while you were in the hospital.” I’m sure I will hear different stories and memories for a long time to come but the consistent theme in all the stories I hear is stability, love and laughter.

Everyday we interact with people that may or may not be there tomorrow and everyday we do things that make or break someone’s day. I wish I could have taped those months in the hospital, only to see and appreciate things I may not have otherwise been able to.

Growing up, I was always taught that the things we do when nobody is watching sometimes counts more than when someone is watching. I’m so glad that the path I am now on has taught me to value that so much more. Keep doing for others what you expect in return, especially when they aren't even immediately aware!

On another note, I have been fitted for my hands, so watch out! :) I should have them in about 4-6 weeks. Hopefully I can bring myself back to talking with my hands. Talk about an adjustment! My hands used to be my second mouth!

Keep the Change: I have collected $180 in change and just need $20 more to get my $200. Where will it go? It's a surprise!

Meet Winter

I discovered another wonderful story today. An Atlantic bottlenose dolphin named Winter is two years old and was caught in a crab trap and eventually lost her tail. She was provided with 24-hour around-the-clock care by veterinarians, volunteers and staff.

As my turtle story showed, without a tail, Winter can neither swim as fast nor jump as high as a normal dolphin. She's had to adapt to how to swim without a tail, which no dolphin has ever done in captivity.

Winter's swimming style changed from up and down to side to side. Veterinarians were concerned that this unusual swimming form might alter the long-term health of her spine. The vets, therefore, began to explore designing a prosthetic tail for Winter.

Her doctor has also designed prosthetics for dogs, ducks and even an ostrich. Wow, how cool of a job does he have?As I continue to be touched by these stories, I also get a bit puzzled.

As a society in general, we tend to put energy into things that make our hearts warm and fuzzy because it feels good, not because it’s the right thing to do. Have you ever wondered why so many animals are getting prosthetics when there are so many humans that have to go without?

Don’t get me wrong, I love that scientists and doctors are taking the time to create such wonders and I do think it's the right thing to do. But, if we put energy into those that can't afford prosthetics this would be an amazing place.

The number of people who loose limbs per year are in the 100’s of 1000’s and a large percentage won’t be able to get their life back because they don’t have access to the proper tools. What about just taking care of someone because it’s the right thing to do?

People make decisions every day that influence others. If we all start taking an interest in something for the sake of the interest rather than letting politics run our decisions I think we would all be amazed at what the human spirit can do.

Hopefully these animals can talk to a few people. :) The next time your faced with a challenge choose the option of “it’s the right thing to do” and watch what happens.

The Gemini's and a Rainbow

We starting moving this weekend into the new house. Let me tell you how much fun that can be with no hands. :) I actually did find ways of doing things but also realized how to discover new things.

I was going through the new house working every switch, handle, knob, etc. giving it all the "Jen Stamp of Approval" and found things I didn't realize I could/couldn't do.

One thing I knew a long time ago but forgot, was that moving with my brother is nothing but laughter. He can make moving a glass the funniest thing you've ever seen. The only down side to this is it may take you 4 hours vs. 2 but it's worth it.

Our birthdays are 1 day apart so we have a lot of crazy commonalities. He and our younger brother Ryan are some of the best friends an older sister could want. If I ever needed support my family and Nick are are what it's all about. They make me forget about things I have gone through. It's truly amazing.

Something else that really made my weekend was being in the car and having little Matthew look up in the sky and say "Look Jen, it's a rainbow." It was so vivid and pretty. This is meaningful because two of my best friends used to come to the hospital and tell me that they saw rainbows when they would come to see me.

Their stories brought me so much faith that it created a special bond for me where they were concerned. I thought of my two friends all day and felt that we were all together for a while. It was really neat.

What things do you notice that remind you of a relationship or special moment? Look really hard. You will find them! Things like this are something to believe in. Have a great few days. I'll talk to you soon.

Possible Adoption, Nursing Home Visit

I am so glad the weather is finally getting warmer! Nothing makes me smile like sunshine.

The weekend was great but I have some good and bad news to share. A really sweet 5 year old friend of mine may be up for adoption this upcoming month.

I was blessed to have met her and she is an amazing source of strength. I have mentioned her before, but she has also lost her hands and legs due to a staph infection that led to menegitis. She is very strong willed and always smiling. Amazing how she has even helped me!

I had dinner with her and her foster mom this weekend as they told me the news. I am happy for her but sad for me. Everyone needs to experience a little child such as this. She has provided me an outlook that is so sweet. Wish for her the best as she has a life that will be challenging and she has only just begun.

I spoke at a retirement community this weekend and had such a great time. The room was filled with the biggest hearts. Each time I do this I am opened to others and their experiences and learn more and more.

I had a lady tell me that she had lost her daughter and how she saw parts of her in me. Wow, we had a wonderful chat! The best compliment of the day came from a lady that walked up to me and said "Honey, I didn't hear a word you said but I sure enjoyed watching you!"

Now if that didn't make me laugh out loud! She was quickly told by a friend to bring her hearing aids next time.

No matter if people are listening or not, they are watching. Lead by example. It's what you do when nobody is watching that counts. Have a great day!

Do We Create the Journey or Does the Journey Create Us?

This post is long over due and thank you to all who sent me emails reminding me of that! Seriously, what would I do without you.

I have learned a lot about myself through life and the journey I am on, but I've always questioned karma and natural life occurrences. Meaning, are we creating our journey by the things we do and say or do the things we do and say create us?

I pose this question because of the experiences I have had the past few weeks. I have met the first lady, finally found a house, been asked to help make a park handicap accessible, am starting a foundation, been asked to speak a few times and am understanding communication better and better. All of this, however, is because of the people around me and those that have helped create this journey.

But, how is this being done? I truly believe that if this had not happened to me and I had not had seen my friends and family go through what they have emotionally, I would not have encountered the spiritual and emotional substance I have obtained. I am now learning and allowing myself to be guided. It's a combination.

The one piece of my journey that has been difficult to understand is having so much to share but not having my grandfather to share it with. For some reason, God was ready for him sooner than we were ready to let go. He was always in my corner and I do so much today with him in my mind. He was a very smart determined person who raised such a great family. He made every holiday so fun and would always laugh at your jokes, good or bad. He was my rock in so many ways.

I often think of how he would handle everything that I have gone through and it makes me work harder and harder everyday. I think he is always around pushing and encouraging me and giving me that confidence I need at times. He would not allow me to be "down" for very long because he always believed that life had too much to offer.

I have used my frustration, confusion and, at times, sadness, as a way to examine myself and find my strengths. I have found more life in my life, than I ever had before. I am happy to have had such an outstanding role model in my grandfather and happy that he is still helping me create my journey.

Don't stop! Find that person or thing that gives you presents with their presence alone. Life will blossom before you know it. We do influence our journey. Think about your choices, you never know when you may need someone.

The Jayhawks & Officially Back to Work

Before I get started, I just want to send a shout out to KU (where Dr. Naismith first invented basketball) for winning the NCAA Championship. Because of this, my brother had the day off from school today!

What a great present to give your fellow classmates and supporters. An executive decision made by those whom (I’m going out on a limb here) thought long and hard about the attendance that would not be in today’s classes anyway?

So, for those who don’t already know, I have returned to the day to day thing people like to refer to as “work”. It’s been great to see so many familiar faces. I held a new title/position for 24 hrs. before becoming ill. So, you can understand my hesitancy in coming back.

But, it’s all good, I have requested a massage every hour to reduce my stress!! Seriously, it’s been one year since I had to talk about contracts and deadlines and figure out how to send a fax (face up/face down?). And our new phone and e-mail system? Wow! I started out with a little over 3,000 e-mails to welcome me back.

My next project? Inventing an object that will start laughing really loud when your email box hits over 99 emails then saying “can no longer process, do it yourself.”

So, how do I do things at work? I have been very successful at taking advantage of my now “prime” parking spots, walking straight up to a door that opens for you (even if you’re having a bad day, this can make you smile) taking a few steps to the elevator and up I go.

I know I have work to do, but I’m trying to tackle the vending machines and figure out how to recruit a Starbucks delivery person (I might put an add on Craig’s list and see what develops). I work within walking distance of Starbucks so I’m constantly feeling taunted!

Wish me luck and I’ll touch base in a few days!

Allison, Jack & Faith

If there is determination in this world, it's definitely in these three! Remember Allison, the sea turtle named after a tourists daughter who found her?

I have wondered about her and apparently the flippers are still being researched but what I thought was touching was that she has to push her now 10 lb body off the bottom, just to breathe.

And she is having difficulty swimming, as anyone would. Three flipper turtles can return to the sea but only having 1 reduces her chances of survival. If your interested, you can donate to the flipper fund at Sea Turtle Inc.

And the dog? Well, let me introduce you to Jack. He has an incurable nerve disease that started to paralyze his hind legs. But wait, not to worry. Eddie's Wheels has it covered!

How cool that we can provide a wheelchair to the best animals. They even have snow skis! Truly amazing. Also, don't forget Faith, the two-legged dog in the video below!

It just takes a few people who care to make someone feel like they are worth a million dollars. I have been officially back to work this week with some pretty amazing cards, hugs and genuine friendship!

Just take a minute to care. Really, really care! Find that "thing" that comforts your heart and watch the rainbows appear.

Back to Reality, MS Walk

We miss our Aussie family but it does feel good to be home! It was such an experiment traveling with Fred & Ginger. I walked more, climbed stairs and ramps and kept them on for more than 20 hours straight with the plane ride.

I am amazed at how they are truly a part of me know. One year ago yesterday I was rushed to the hospital only to have God teach me what it means to fight and to truly understand how quickly he can challenge your world.

I never would have thought I would be walking around Sydney harbour without anything but the support of my husband's arm. It's been an amazing year! Thanks to everyone again and again for the love and support you have provided!

The other person to thank is my mom, my #1 fan. :) It's our turn to take the focus off of me and take a minute to show her support. My mom was diagnosed with MS many years ago after many tests. She is doing well but I wish she wouldn't have to experience it at all.

My brother, myself and his fiance, Christy are going to participate in an MS Walk fundraiser this weekend in Addison. If anyone needs exercise you should attend. It's well worth it. I may be at the finish line holding water, but I will be there. Love you mom!

I was offered the opportunity to meet with a firefighter this week. He has lost a leg and is currently in treatment with some of the therapists I worked with. I am looking forward to this.

In addition, I am being able to have coffee with someone who prayed for me a lot while I was in the hospital and we had a connection as her son was in the hospital at the same time as me.

me.It's amazing the people God continues to bring in my life! Thank you to everyone for being with me this past year.

Cheers to the Simple Things & Happy Easter

The Easter bunny has been quite busy between the states and Australia. We woke up today to birds chirping, a sunny day and great coffee.

But, what about the bunny himself? Well, in Australia the bunny that the US knows, is not a popular one because of the damage they do to the land.

The prefered celebrant is the bilby. In 1991 a campaign was started by the Anti-Rabbit Research Foundation to replace the Easter Bunny with the Easter bilby (an endangered species by the way).

Other traditions? Hot cross buns (sweet spiced bun), pancake day (or shrove tuesday, last day before lent), Sydney Royal Easter Show (little Matthew had a really fun time), and the best of all, a 4 day weekend!

The holiday time here is really something the US could learn from! Kids go to school year round but have 4 big breaks. Anyway, Nick's uncle and his 2 little girls flew in last night so we are enjoying the last few days with them.

The simple pleasures? We did some great shopping yesterday and I witnessed the best exchange of happiness that I wanted to share. We were in a department store that had a wonderful pianist playing so we took a minute to sit down and listen.

As we are listening and looking at all our purchase options, an elderly lady walking with a cane scoots herself up to the pianist. She puts her arm around the pianist, smiles, and starts digging in her pocket for what we assumed would be money.

As we were "assuming", out comes 2 chocolate lady bugs which get sat on the top of the piano and are followed with a hug and kiss by the elderly lady. She tells the pianist how good her music was and they both smiled. Out of all the fabulous things you could buy in this store that was something that no amount of money could have bought!

I have also discovered one other simple thing. The addresses here are so easy. If you have 6 houses on a street, your number will be 1, 2, 3, etc. Ever wonder why the US houses are 4 numbers and aren't really relevant? I'm sure there is a logical reason but it's not simple or obvious. :)

Well, more later! Enjoy your bunnies, bilby's and chocolate today. We are on the road to the US tomorrow (mid-day monday or sunday US time). So, lots more stories to follow! All the best to you & yours today.

Jen

Back to Syndey We Go

G'day all. We are at the airport heading back to Sydney for the weekend. I have to say this is about the quickest security ever. They had more questions about Fred & Ginger themselves vs. whether or not I was carrying anything. :)
Hanging out in Kingscliff has been such a great time and met fun people. Walking on the beach has been a bit interesting.

If you ever need a really hard workout, grab prosthetics and start walking.

It feels like your in quicksand but you soon get your strategy. It has made me focus on everything around me as my surroundings have changed so much.

The overall experience with my challenges hasn't been bad at all. The only situation I can say was tough was trying to give a "peace" sign in a photo. I just had to smile and think it in my head.

One interesting bit though, is that most of the disabled bathrooms have been more difficult to access than the non-disabled. The locks are much easier in the non. Strange, huh?

While I'm comparing things, what about the coffee? It's a whole different concept with different terminology here. I have yet to find creamer besides milk! And what about just a "drip", is that a long black or a short/long white? It's been fun. Nick and I are going broke just on coffee, ha!

Well, more comparisons later. Just realized we are starting to board. Have a great day!

The Aussie Life

I can't believe it's been a week already. Did you know people here drive on the wrong side of the road, surf a lot and take boats to work? :)

We have traveled from Sydney to Kingscliff, to Nimbin and back to Kingscliff and we are on the road tomorrow as well.

Let me start by saying that Sydney is amazing!
My first amazing bit was when I ordered a hamburger and it came with an egg on top (amongst other foreign objects). Apparently this is pretty standard in the Aussie world and I have to say it was really good. I soon started seeing amazing everywhere.

Our first night we had a beautiful dinner on the barbie with Nick's family. The weather has been about 25 celcius. We have been to the aquarium (wow), Hyde park, Palm Beach, Bondi Beach, Icebergs and all of Nick's old stomping grounds.

That has been good fun. Getting in the beach was such a great feeling. A bit scary at first but, once the water touched me I thought "no worries, I can do this".

One of our highlights was seeing Jack Johnson, Matt Costa & G-Love & Special Sauce in Centennial Park. It was one of the best concerts I have been to. I have seen Jack before but not like this. Words cannot accurately describe how amazing it was!

We are now by the Gold Coast at Marie's—my wonderful mother-in-law. We have been enjoying our time with her and explored some new territory today.

If you are ever in Australia, you must check out a little place called Nimbin—hippies, hippies and more hippies! We saw things that kept a smile on our face all day. :) Not to mention the drive is gorgeous. It's the most awesome bit of rain forest.

We are going to Byron Bay this week which I am really excited about. They have great markets and local shopping. Not to mention this is the new hot spot and about an hour from Marie. Who knows who we may see.

We are flying back to Sydney on Friday for more family stuff then back to Dallas on Monday. Australia is such a place to fall in love with and forget who you are for a while. I have had more meat pies, lemon tarts and beers than I have my whole life—ha!

I have so much more to share I just wanted to say hey from Oz. I will write again in a few days. I hope your week is going well!

Runaway Mascara, Another Speaking Event, Daisy the Labradoodle & Bon Voyage

This week has really gone by fast! Let me just say that I started the week off by meeting a friend for lunch with half of my make-up done.

Why you ask? Well, I was doing great until my mascara slips out of my hand, rolls under a piece of furniture, and rolls far, far away. Then everything else seemed to fall. I had about 10 minutes to be at lunch so I made an executive decision to go anyway and suck it up. :) I had one side done and the other, well, not.

It wasn't pretty but my stomach thanked me with lunch! I also had the opportunity to speak to a wonderful group at a law firm this week. It was very rewarding and it prompted great questions as well. It's funny how speaking can lift your own spirits while trying to help others.

I met a wonderful little girl named Daisy today. She is 1 year old and is also known as a "Labradoodle". Yeah! This is not a definite, but she may make the service dog program that I am involved in. If that is the case, I may have a new addition to our family. She is so adorable. I will keep you posted as this will take several months.

Happy birthday to Marie, my awesome mother-in-law. My parents and Marie are all turning 60 this year! Blow out some candles and have a glass of wine or a beer—it's someone's birthday somewhere! We will celebrate soon when we fly our way to Sydney, Australia this coming Monday!

I am so excited and can't wait to explore. We were planning to go last year before I got sick and never made it, so this is a well deserved trip. Hopefully I can find a job as a beach bum surfing! Just kidding—I'll be back, maybe. :)

I am really happy to finally be meeting the rest of Nick's family whom we have talked for so long. My parents and grandmother are headed to the big "D" for the weekend so that will be a fun bon voyage! We always have a great time and enjoy delicious food when they are in town—especially with dad and his free-loader fork, ha!

Have a great weekend everyone and I will be talking, blogging and thinking about you all while we are down under!

Love,
Jen
